Abstract

1276381 Multi-layer coating EASTMAN KODAK CO 3 June 1969 [3 June 1968 (2)] 27948/69 Heading B2L [Also in Division D1] A plurality of adjacent layers, each of liquid coating material, are allowed to fall between lateral guides as a vertical curtain 19 on to a moving web 11 to form a multi-layer coating. A multi-layer curtain may fall from a variably inclined surface to which liquid is supplied from a plurality of spaced slits under pressure (as shown), a two layer curtain may fall from a gravity Y-passage at the base of a two compartment hopper (not shown). Each guide may have a trailing brush (Fig. 3) or resilient strip (Fig. 4). Air flowing together with the web before coating may be reduced by shields (as shown) or a pump (not shown). Coating may be interrupted by a deflector 41. Coating may be formed above a support roll (as shown) or between support rolls (not shown). Examples of the formation of photographic film and paper are given.
