Abstract

127,586. Corning Glass Works, (Assignees of Gage, H. P., and Taylor, W. C.). May 28, 1918, [Convention date]. Production of metal.-Relates to the production of a practically opaque glass which has a high transmission for ultra-violet rays. Nickel oxide (Ni 0) in the proportion of ¢ to 12 per cent is employed in a glass mixture which is substantially free from lime, magnesia, lead oxide, alumina, and boric oxide. Various compositions for barytic and zinc glasses are given. Glasses containing only a small proportion of nickel transmit extreme red and infra-red as well as ultraviolet rays. The preferred composition is Si O2, 50; K2 0, 16; Ba 0, 25; and Ni 0, 9 per cent. A small percentage of cupric oxide may be added to reduce the transmission of red rays.
