Abstract
1275824 Inert gases; nitrogen GAKO GES FUR GAS-KOHLE UND OLFEUERUNGEN mbH 23 May 1969 26521/69 Heading C1A In the production of a gas which is substantially free from CO 2 and which consists primarily of N 2 and inert elemental gas(es), the combustion gases from an internal combustion engine are fed, at least in part, to a compressor coupled to the combustion engine. The combustion gases may be produced by burning diesel oil in air, and may be subjected to cleaning and/or cooling before and/or after feeding them to the compressor to remove O 2 , SO 2 , H 2 , CO 2 , CO and/or H 2 O. In one embodiment (Fig. 5) a diesel engine and a compressor are mounted on a frame, the longitudinal members of which are hollow and contain an adsorbant for CO 2 . Fig. 4 shows an internal combustion engine K followed by chambers C 1 and C 2 containing catalysts in which CO and H 2 are burned, chamber C 3 containing a soot filter, compressor A, water scrubber W and CO 2 adsorption plant C 4 . The I.C. engine may be coupled to more than one compressor, together with one or more other machines such as blowers and electrical generators. The process permits the production of Ar-containing N 2 with expenditure of 1/6 of the energy required in hitherto known processes.
