Abstract
1275424 Rolling mills TEXTRON Inc 9 May 1969 [29 May 1968] 23818/69 Heading B3M [Also in Division G3] A rolling mill screwdown includes a double acting piston 13 acting on an adjustable roll 11 the piston being supplied with fluid to provide a constant position of the piston, and hence the roll. Any movement of the piston from a desired position leads to a core 18 moving relative to a coil 19, and an error signal being produced. The signal causes a servo valve 28 to reset the piston to its desired position. The roll gap of the mill is adjustable by moving the coil 19 by a stepping motor 20. The motor signal originates from a unit 21 responsive to an automatic gauge control system. To operate the screwdown to maintain a constant pressure acting on the piston, the switch 33 is opened, switches 31 and 32 closed, and the valve 30 assumes the position shown. A control signal for the servo valve 28 is compounded from a signal from a pressure transducer 34 and a signal from a reference potentiometer 35 which is adjustable by the motor 20.
