Abstract

1275389 Coated paper products ARMOUR INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL CO 3 April 1969 [29 April 1968] 51895/71 Divided out of 1268780 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3 D1 and D2] Paper or board is coated or sized with solvent-free stable aqueous dispersions which comprise, by wt based on the dispersion: 0.25-75% polyamide resin; 0.2-10% dispersing agent; and 15-99% water. The polyamide resin has particle size <10Ám, and is liquid at 225-400‹ F. It may be a reactive or non- reactive resin; and may be made from monoamino-mono-carboxylic acids or derivatives, or from carboxylic acids and amines. The dispersing agent may be cationic, anionic, or non- ionic; it may be, or may be derived from, an amine or quaternary ammonium compound, e.g. a diamine or diquaternary ammonium compound, or imidazolines. The dispersion may be made by heating the resin to >75‹F above the R. and B. softening point to 225-400‹ F, and mixing with the other ingredients at 120‹- 160‹F by passage through a colloid mill with head-clearance 0.005-0.012#, 5-30 psig headpressure, and 5-15 psig back-pressure; and cooling the mixture below the boiling point of water. 60-85% of the dispersing agent may be added to the water, and 15-40% to the resin: Other additives include silicone oils; e.g. 0.05-0.5% of water-soluble salts as stabilisers; pigments, dyes, or levelling agents.
