Abstract

1275162 Optical brightening of textiles CIBA-GEIGY AG 17 Aug 1970 [27 Aug 1969] 39577/70 Heading DIP In a process for the optical brightening of organic fibres, the fibres are treated with a preparation comprising an organic solvent which can take up at most 1% by weight of water and containing a water soluble optical brightener in a dispersed state and a surfaceactive agent soluble in the organic solvent, the solvent subsequently being removed from the treated fibres, which may then be subjected to a thermal after-treatment. Suitable solvents are given as petrol hydrocarbons e.g. petroleum ether, benzene and halogen substituted benzenes or alkyl substituted benzenes e.g. toluene, ethyl benzene, cumene, and monochloro-and dichloro-benzene; tetralin or cyclohexane, tin- or per-chloroethylene, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and chlorinated ethanes. The optical brightener may be derived from one of the following types or may be a mixture of these a) 4, 4' bis (acylamino)-stilbene-2, 2' disulphonic acids, b) 4, 4' bis (triazinylamino)-stilbene-2, 2' disulphonic acids, c) 4, 4' bis-(azoyl)-stilbene-2, 2'-disulphonic acids, d) stilbyl-naphthotriazoles, e) Bis-(benzoxazole- 2-yl) derivatives, f) Monomethine-cyanines, g) 2, 7-bis (aroylamino)- dibenzothiophenedioxide- 3, 6-disulphonic acids, h) 1, 3 diaryl-pyrozolines, i) Styrylbenzoxazoles, j) bis-styrylaryl compounds, k) Bis-benzoxazolylaryls or 1) oxdiazole compounds. The surface active agent may be one of the following types of compound i) polyoxalkylated-fatty alcohols, polyols, mercaptans or aliphatic amines, alkyl phenols, alkyl naphthols, alkyl aryl mercaptans or alkyl arylamines or esters of these compounds with sulphuric or phosphoric acid or as ammonium or amine salts. ii) Fatty acid esters of ethylene glycol, and polyethylene glycols or of propylene or butylene glycol, of glycerine or polyglycerines, of pentaerythritol or of sorbitol. iii) N-hydroxyalkylcarbonamides and polyoxalkylated carbonamides and sulphonamides. The preparation may also contain a small amount of a shading dyestuff and since the process is carried out in an organic solvent a swelling agent examples of which are given. After treatment the solvent is removed e.g. by centrifuging and treatment with warm air to dry the fibres, and in the absence of a smelling agent a subsequent steaming process is used to improve the brightening effect. The process is described as being applicable to textile materials of polyamide, wool and cellulosic materials including cotton and regenerated cellulose.
