[Also in Division C5] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein B is a benzene ring to whicn one or more OH groups are directly attached, m is an integer, R is H or alkyl, A is the acid residue of the organic carboxylic or sulphonic acid D(AH) n+1 , where D is a carbon- and hydrogencontaining group, n is an integer and M is a metal. NH 4 or the radical derived from an amino compound, p being 1 or the valency of the metal M. They may be obtained by reacting a phenolic compound with an aldehyde at a temperature below 50‹ C., the pH of the reaction medium being above 7, esterifying the methylol or substituted methylol derivative thereby obtained by reacting said derivative with a polybasic carboxylic or sulphonic acid or anhydride, and reacting the ester-acid obtained with a metal base, NH 3 , NH 4 OH or an amine.
