Abstract
1,274,649. Phosphorus oxychloride. ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd. 26 Aug., 1969 [26 Aug., 1968], No. 40681/68. Heading C1A. Phosphorus oxychloride is prepared continuously by reacting P 2 O 5 , PCl 3 and Cl 2 under reflux at a temperature above the boiling point of POCl 3 but below 160‹ C., maintaining an excess of P 2 O 5 and PCl 3 with respect to Cl 2 in the reaction mixture, removing PCl 3 and POCl 3 from the upper part of the reflux system and passing them to an intermediate part of a fractionating column maintained at a temperature above the boiling point of PCl 3 but below the boiling point of POCl 3 , recovering liquid POCl 3 from the lower part of the fractionating column and PCl 3 vapour from the upper part of the fractionating column, condensing the PCl 3 vapour and refluxing at least part of the condensate through the fractionating column. The reaction mixture is preferably maintained at a temperature of 100-130‹ C., the head of the reflux system is preferably maintained at a temperature of 90- 110‹ C., and the fractionating column is preferably maintained at a temperature of 75-90‹ C.
