Abstract

1,274,607. Selective signalling. CREED & CO. Ltd. 23 March, 1971, No. 7545/71. Heading G4H. A visual display device displays characters from a keyboard on a drum, and includes a character-signal store activating a recording unit via a converter, the recording unit forming latent images on the drum as patterns of dots in a rectangular array. The store is two closed-loop shift registers in series and feeds two converters each controlling a respective column of 7 magnetic recording heads, the two columns being mounted 4 character widths apart on a belt assembly by which the columns can be moved together parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum to each record 4 characters each as 5 columns of 7 dots (present/absent). After such recording, the drum is rotated through 180 degrees and the recorded images are developed by a powder applicator to render them visible. The characters from the printer are also sent to a store associated with a remote line-at-a-time printer. When the line is complete, a key on the keyboard is pressed to cause printing at the remote location and to erase the display.
