Abstract

1,274,374. Fluid collection device. SALT & SON Ltd. 19 April, 1971 [26 Feb., 1970], No. 9335/70. Heading A5R. A fluid collection device comprises a plate 10 for attachment to the body of a patient, and having an aperture and a tubular part 11 attached to one side of the plate so that the tube is coaxial with the aperture, and an annular recess 13 for the location of a ring 14 of soft material around the aperture at the other side of the plate which is to be disposed adjacent the body of a patient, and a bag 26 of flexible waterproof material which is secured to the tubular part 11. The plate 10 and tubular portion 11, which may be formed integrally with the plate are of rubber material, and the ring 14 may be of absorbent material. When the device is used for collecting urine from a male person, a tubular adapter 22 of resilient rubber material is secured at one end around the outwardly flared end 24 of the tubular portion 11, and at the other end to a bag 26. Ribs 28 are provided to reinforce the adaptor. A fluid non-return valve 25 prevents a back flow of urine from the bag into the adapter, and a drainage valve 27 is provided at the base of the bag 26. Straps 16, 17 and 18 secure the device to the body. The device may be used without the adapter for collecting discharge from wounds, the bag being secured by adhesive to the tubular part, in which case the ring may comprise an absorbent material impregnated with medicament or a substance such as a pliable mixture of karaya gum and glycerine having intrinsic curative properties.
