Abstract

1,273,725. Counterbalancing; catch gear. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 14 Jan., 1970 [27 Jan., 1969], No. 1814/70. Headings B8B and B8L. An apparatus for counterbalancing a loaded carriage 12 vertically movable along a column 5 mounted on a wheeled base 7, comprises a cable-pulley system including fuzee drums 22, and a pair of cables 16 tensioned by a compression spring 28 housed in the column 5. The cables 16 each extend upwardly from the carriage on to a spirally grooved fuzee drum 22 and an integral multi-grooved drum 24, down and around a jockey pulley 26 and up to an anchor 30 on the column. The pulley 26 is mounted on a member 38 which is screwed into a movable plate engaging the lower end of the spring 28, the screw being adjustable to preload the spring. The cables 16 are wound on to the fuzee drums such that the effective diameters thereof at any time is related to the extent of compression of the spring 28, whereupon the loaded carriage 12 is balanced in any position along the column. The carriage incorporates rollers 14 movable along opposed channel members 9 on the column, and the cables are coupled to the carriage through a tension equalizing and safety lock member. The latter is centrally pivoted to the carriage for cable tension equalization and has the cables pivoted to opposite ends of the member whereby if one cable breaks, the member will tilt and lock against one of the channels 9.
