An indexing device for a multi-point tool sharpener comprises a spindle 1 which is driven by a motor 3 and, at one end, is adapted to carry a tool to be sharpened and, at the other, carries a replaceable toothed index plate 2, a gear 4 for engaging a mechanism for rotating the spindle freely mounted on the spindle, a slide 5 reciprocable along guides 4a on the gear and carrying first and second latches 6, 7 arranged to engage the index plate to prevent rotation thereof at respective first and second slide positions, and means for driving the slide from its first to its second position to initiate an indexing step and from its second position to its first position to complete the indexing step during which the first latch engages at the end of the step the index plate tooth adjacent that engaged at the beginning of the step. The spindle 1 has a centre at one end for receiving the hob to be sharpened and an index plate, which has the same number of teeth as that of the hob, is secured to the other end of the spindle. The gear 4 is rotatable on the spindle and is formed with roller guides 4a for slidably receiving the slide 5 on which is a fixed latch 6 and a spring-loaded latch 7 for engaging the teeth of the index plate the slide is formed with a rack 5a engaging a toothed quadrant 15 which also engages a rack 14a on a bush 14 axially movable on a hub of the gear 4 by a lever 13 connected to the rod of a piston 2 in a cylinder 9. The chambers 10, 11 are supplied with fluid pressure under the control of a reversing valve 16 operated by a cam 17 during operation of the sharpening machine. When fluid is supplied to chamber 10 upon actuation of valve 16 by cam 17, the piston moves to the left to move the bush 14 and, via the quadrant, the slide 5 whereby the latch 5 is disengaged from tooth 2a of the index plate and, as the spindle is urged to rotate by a constantly operating hydraulic motor 3, the spring-loaded latch 7 engages the back 2b of tooth 2c and then tooth 2d. The indexing step is completed by the cam 17 reversing valve 16 to return the piston to its original position, the slide moving to disengage the spring-loaded latch 7 and engage the latch 6 with the tooth 2e adjacent the initially-engaged tooth 2a.
