A single spindle automatic turret lathe comprises a bed 1 supporting a headstock 2 with a work spindle 4, a beam 5 extending from the headstock parallel to the bed and supported thereon, a longitudinal slideway 6 on the beam which supports a carriage 7 which is movable along the slideway in a vertical plane, a turret slide 10 mounted on the carriage and which is angularly adjustable between two extreme positions in a vertical plane whereby the turret slide may be operated transversely or obliquely to the spindle axis to present a tool carried in the turret at a suitable angle required in a particular machining operation. The turret slide is secured to a sole plate 8 which is pivotable and clampable on the carriage in the required angular position. The turret is indexable by an hydraulic piston and cylinder 17, 18, the piston 18 also constituting a rack 19 which actuates the indexing gearing 20, 22. Hydraulic fluid pressure which is admitted to chamber 27 effects axial displacement of the turret to disengage the locating teeth 23, 24 to permit the indexing movement. Rotary stop members 35, 34 on the turret slide 10 and carriage 7 respectively control the traversing movements of the slide and carriage and are actuated through gearing in unison with the indexing of the turret. To provide a positive drive connection between the stop drum 34 and the turret slide in any of its angularly adjusted positions, there is provided a telescopic shaft 45 connected to the stop drum gears and the turret base respectively by universal joints 44, 46. The hydraulic actuating means and the indexing mechanism are carried solely on the turret slide.
