A rectification or like column has two sets of vertically spaced rectangular contact trays 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 and 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 separated by a vertical partion 11 and downcomers such as 14 connecting for liquid flow trays 1, 4, 5, 8 and 9 and 2, 3, 6, 7 and 10, the arrangement being such that liquid flows in a straight line parallel with the partition 11 on each tray and the direction of flow of liquid on one set of trays being the same and opposite to the direction of flow of liquid on the trays of the other set. The downcomer 14 comprises a trough 12 and an inclined plate 13 with perforations through which the down-flowing liquid passes.
