Abstract

1,272,572. Polymerizing lactones. LAPORTE CHEMICALS Ltd. 23 June, 1969 [21 March, 1968], No. 13813/69. Addition to 1,210,496. Heading C3R. A polyester is produced by reacting at least one lactone of the Formula I where each R, which may be the same or different, is methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, hydrogen, chlorine or bromine, provided that the total number of carbon atoms in the (CR 2 ) n-1 group does not exceed 12 and that the (CR 2 ) n-1 group contains not more than 2 halogen atoms, and n is an integer from 5 to 12, with a chain initiator, in the presence of an acidactivated clay mineral as catalyst. Preferably n is 5, 6 or 7. The chain initiator may be an alcohol, a mono- or dialkylamine or an aminoalcohol. The catalyst may be derived from a montmorillonite clay having calcium, sodium or magnesium in base exchange positions, or from illite, a clay of the kaoline family or attapulgite. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 859,642.
