Abstract

1,271,882. Electro-photographic developing apparatus; automatic control of concentration. RCA CORPORATION. March 31, 1970 [March 27, 1969], No. 15261/70. Headings G2H and G3R. [Also in Division G1] Developer 12, comprising toner and magnetic or conductive carrier particles is sampled by allowing it to fall from a reservoir 50 into a tube 62 around which a coil 70 is wrapped; the inductance of coil 70, which is a function of toner concentration, being used to indicate toner concentration and/or to control toner replenishment from a reservoir 80. In one embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown) 9 circuit connected to coil 70 energizes a motor 76 for rotating a toner feed rod 82 only when toner concentration falls below a predetermined value. In another embodiment Fig. 5 (not shown) the circuit is such that motor 76 is permanently energized, but the rate of rotation of rod 82 is dependant on toner concentration. Developer is returned from tube 62 to reservoir 50 by a screw conveyer (66) Fig. 2 (not shown). Developer may be agitated by a paddle 52 and may be applied under the influence of an electrode 60 by a magnetic brush formed by rotating a brass tube 44 about a magnet 42 and a soft iron bar 48. A motor 54 for photo-conductive sheet feed rollers 20, 22 may be de-energized by the circuit if toner concentration falls so low that reservoir 80 must be empty.
