Abstract

1,271,855. Pipe connector. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DES PETROLES S.A. 23 July, 1969 [22 Nov., 1968], No. 36969/69. Heading F2G. A pipe coupling comprises a tube, a fixed collar secured to the tube, a collar slidable axially along the tube, a sealing ring, and piston and cylinder means whereby the sealing ring may be compressed between the said collars so as to sealingly engage the periphery of a pipe, locking means being provided to retain the movable collar in the ring compressing position. In one embodiment the fixed collar 4 is secured inside tube 3 and is separated from movable collar 6 by gasket 5 fitting over the pipe 25. Projections 7, 10 on collars 6, 9 engage a resilient gasket 8, and a wedge section annulus 14 projects from collar 9 into annular cylinder 11. An annular piston 21 has a plurality of lugs 26 supporting wedges 13. Introduction of pressurized fluid via port 20 forces the piston and collar 9 leftwards compressing gasket 8 and thereby causing collar 6 to press gasket 5 into sealing engagement with pipe 25. Riesilent gasket 8 also sealingly engages the tube 3 and pipe 25 when so compressed. Serrations 29 in wedges 13 are brought to bear on the tube surface thereby locking the collar. To disconnect the joint pressurized fluid introduced via hole 19 slightly recompresses the gasket 8 relieving the radial force on the wedges and allowing piston 21 to be forced leftwards. In another embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) the connector comprises a narrow tube with the sealing apparatus mounted externally and adapted for fitting inside the pipes to be joined. In this case the holes 19, 20 can be provided either inside or outside the connector. Pieces 18a, (34a), may be used to facilitate insertion into or around pipes.
