Abstract

1271006 Electric infrared radiators THERMAL QUARZ-SCHMELZE GmbH 5 Dec 1969 [20 Dec 1968] 59623/69 Headings F4W and W61 An infrared surface irradiator comprises a casing 1 accommodating a plurality of electrically heated quartz tubes 5a-5g of different thermal outputs. The different outputs are obtained, e.g. by having high temperature heating filaments 7 in some tubes 5a, 5c, 5e and 5g, and filaments 7 of lower temperature in other tubes 5b and 5f. Tube 5d is without a filament and is thus heated only indirectly, itself then radiating at a wavelength corresponding to a lower infrared region, and providing an alternative way of obtaining a different thermal output. The quartz tubes may be of flattened section, as the tubes 12, Fig.5, with two lengths of filament 7 separated by quartz tubes 13. Indirectly heated tubes 14 without filaments are interposed between the tubes 12. Metal casing 1 forms a reflector in which ceramic supports 2 are secured by bolts 3. The supply leads 8 have strain relieving bushings 10. Applications to heating travelling plastics sheet materials, paper webs and lacquered surfaces are mentioned, as well as heating stationary plastics films and plates prior to thermoforming in vacuum forming machines.
