Abstract

1,270,861. Inserting stator windings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 22 July, 1969 [29 July, 1968], No. 36819/69. Heading B3A. Apparatus for inserting insulators 75 and side turn portions of a coil 100 into axial slots 97 of a stator core 21, comprises means for guiding the insulators into selected core slots, pusher means for forcing the insulators into the slots and a coil turn feeder assembly including divider blades 56-61 and coil turn feeder blades 41-45. The insulators 75 are initially loaded by inserting them into guide apertures 24 before the stator 21 is positioned over the head assembly 25, Fig. 4. After the insulators have been loaded, a number of coils 96 are wound in turn-receiving gaps of the assembly. Hydraulic cylinders (not shown) provided with push-rods (80), 81 are actuated to move a driver 68 upwardly away from a stationary plate 69, see also Fig. 6 (not shown). This movement is transmitted to insulator pushers 67 carried by the driver, which travel through an increment A until the leading edges 94 of the insulators 75 lag slightly behind turn pushing ledges 47, 51 on the feeder blades 41-45. The driver 68 then engages a stop-nut 22 and a shaft 64 and a feeder blade cylinder 73 move conjointly therewith through an increment B. The nut 22 is threaded on the cylinder 73 and its position determines the length of the increment B, during which the divider blades 56-61 and the coil turn feeder blades 41-45 are driven as as assembly into the stator bore and the coil turns partially enter the slots 97. A stop-nut 23 then abuts the stationary plate 69 thereby stopping further movement of the shaft 64 and of the divider blades. The driver 68 then moves through an increment C during which the cylinder 73 drives the feeder blades 41-45 through the slots to position the coil turns therein and the insulator pushers 67 drive the insulators over the inserted coils. The positions of the stop-nuts 22, 23 are adjusted to suit the stack height of the particular stator 21. The apparatus can be adapted for inserting coils and insulators into stators of four and six pole motors, Fig. 3 (not shown). In a modification a press back fin member (129) trails a coil feeder blade (131) to press back the coils in the slots and a slot entrance fin member (130) forces any displaced coil turns in the slot entrances further back into the slots, Fig. 12 (not shown).
