Abstract

A vehicular hydraulic system includes an electromagnetic valve E in the main pressure line between a master cylinder 3 and a wheel cylinder 4 and in the event of severe deceleration of the wheel during a driver controlled braking action the electromagnetic valve E is actuated to cut off communication between the master cylinder 3 and the wheel cylinder 4 and after a short interval an outlet valve A opens to reduce the pressure in the wheel cylinder 4, the fluid being returned to the line 1 via a line 5 incorporating a pump P and a non-return valve 6. If however the driver ceases operation of the msater cylinder 3 before the valve A opens, pressure will remain in the cylinder 4 and this pressure is relieved through a non- return valve 7 which by-passes the electromagnetic valve E and allows equalization of pressure on either side of the valve E. Fig. 2 shows a practical form of device wherein the valves E and 7 are situated in the same housing held between two clamping plates 8, 9. The valve E comprises a pole member 10 with a magnet winding 11 therearound, the pole member 10 having a central bore 12 for fluid flow which bore 12 has a valve seal 13 engageable by a movable closure member 14. The closure member 14 is fixed to an armature 15 biased by a spring 17. The valve 7 essentially comprises a spring biased closure member 20 movable in a bore 19 and engageable with a valve seat 23. When a braking operation is initiated fluid passes from the master cylinder through the bore 12, the open valve 13, 14 into an annular passage 32 and to the wheel cylinder. On the approach of a skid condition as a result of severe deceleration of the wheel the winding 11 is energized to cause closure of the valve 13, 14. If the pressure in the master cylinder is now reduced before the outlet valve A is opened the closure member 20 is moved off the seat 23 and fluid flows through bores 33, 34 chamber 35, bores 18, 19 and passage 31 to equalize the pressures on opposite sides of the valve E.
