1,269,643. Internally-meshing gear pumps and motors. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. July 7, 1969 [July 19, 1968], No.34497/68. Heading F1F. An internally-meshing gear pump (or motor) comprising an internally-toothed ring gear 17, Fig. 1, mountedfor rotation in a housing 10, a meshing pinion 16 mounted for rotation on an axis parallel to and spaced from the ring gear axis and a crescent-shaped member 27 therebetween having inner and outer arcuate faces engaging the pinion and ring gear teeth respectively, includes fixed and movable side-plates 19, 20, Fig. 2, pressing against opposite axial end-faces of the pinion and ring gear with the crescent-shaped member fixed with respect to the fixed side-plate 19 and slidable with respect to the movable side-plate 20 and a resilient sealing element 34 extending in a peripheral groove around at least part of the crescent-shaped member to sealingly engage a complementary crescent-shaped hole in the plate 20. When extending only part way round the member 27 the sealing element 34 is located at that end of the member 27 adjacent the high-pressure port 29. The high-pressure port and low-pressure port 28 are bifurcated and communicate respectively with apertures 31, 30 in the side-plates 19, 20 on opposite sides of the zone where the pinion 16 and ring gear 17 are inter-engaged. Grooves 32, 33 extending from the aperture 30 on opposite sides of the member 27 prevent cavitation by continuously allowing liquid to enter the spaces between the inter-engaging teeth at the radially inner extreme of the spaces. The plate 20 is secured to a bell member 21 which is acted upon by pistons 23, 24, 25 subjected to the pressure obtaining at the high-pressure part to urge the plate 20 into sealing engagement with the axial end-faces of the pinion and ring gear and the pinion and ring gear in turn in sealing engagement with the plate 19.
