Abstract
1,269,569. Moulding pen nibs. J. S. STAEDTLER. 28 July, 1969 [2 Aug., 1968], No. 37734/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B6] A pen nib for a drawing or recording instrument comprises a tube made from a composition wherein particles of a hard wear-resistant material are embedded in a thermosetting binder, a preferred ratio of hard material to binder being 3: 1 by weight. The binder may be an epoxy, polyester, phenol or melamine thermosetting resin and the hard material may be a carbide, nitride, oxide or boride of iron, titanium, niobium, tantalum, tungsten or aluminium, or a carbide, nitride or oxide of boron. The hard material may be coated with a heat temperable alloy, e.g. titanium carbide in a steel alloy. The tube may be made by directly extruding or injection moulding a tube or forming a solid cylinder by these techniques which is subsequently drilled, Fig. 3 (not shown). One end (6), Fig. 2 (not shown), of the tube is rounded by grinding.
