Abstract

1,269,306. Electrophotographic materials. FUJI PHOTO FILM CO. Ltd. 14 Oct., 1970 [15 Oct., 1969], No. 48862/70. Heading HlK. An electrophotographic material has a support of fibrous cellulosic material coated with a water resistant layer comprising clay or an inorganic pigment. Such a coated support may be art paper, machine-coated paper, or baryta paper. On a coated surface an electrically conductive (solvent) barrier layer is formed so as to have a very smooth surface, by castcoating or by subsequent calendering, and comprises a high proportion of colloidal alumina. The alumina may have chloride or acetate ions adsorbed thereon and the layer may also contain colloidal silica, electrically conductive resins, and cationic or neutral polymers such as polyvinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride and polyvinyl alcohol. The photoconductive layer may be formed directly on the alumina layer or on an intervening insulating film which controls carrier injection into the photoconductor. Photoconductors used are zinc oxide or a mixture of polyvinylcarbazole and chlorinated diphenyl. Binders used are a copolymer of ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, and acrylic acid; a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, incorporating ethylphthalylethylglycolate; and a mixture of styrenated alkyd resin and polyisocyanate resin. The back surface of the support may be coated with a layer of carbon and polyvinyl acetate; of a conductive resin; or of potassium polyvinylbenzenesulphonate.
