Abstract

1,269,273. Porous crystalline alumina. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 6 June, 1969, No. 28833/69. Heading C1A. Porous crystalline alumina of high surface area is prepared by heating a solution containing an aluminium compound and formic acid by direct contact with a hot immiscible liquid to precipitate anhydrous alumina and simultaneously decompose the formic acid to provide an in situ blowing agent. The solution is preferably added dropwise to a hydrocarbon oil heated to 145-100‹ F. The Al compound may be nitrate, sulphate, hydroxide, formate, basic formate, acetate, subacetate, or a salt of a higher fatty acid. The recovered alumina may be washed with n-heptane, benzene, cyclohexane, or a halogenated paraffin; calcined at 700-1400 ‹F., and ground to - 100 mesh.
