Abstract

1,268,784. Foamed vinyl chloride polymer articles. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 14 April, 1969, No. 19011/69. Headings C3C, C3G and C3P. A foamed shaped article (i.e. one formed in a well-defined predetermined shape by moulding, extrusion or a similar process) of a vinyl chloride mono- or co-polymer is prepared by contacting a pore-free shaped article of the polymer with an organic liquid having a boiling point below -20‹ C. to cause swelling throughout the article and then foaming the swollen article by heating at an elevated temperature. In the examples sheets and tubes of polyvinyl chloride and a graft copolymer of acrylonitrile/butadiene on to polyvinyl chloride were swollen with methyl chloride and difluorodichloromethane and foamed using hot water. Steam and superheated steam may also be used. The sheets may be placed between wire nets or subjected to tensional force in their planes during foaming.
