Abstract

1,268,429. Automatic position control. CAMBRIDGE THERMIONIC CORP. Nov,14, 1969, No.55882/69. Heading G3R. In a system for automatically maintaining an object in a desired position between two electromagnets which apply opposing forces, the energizations of the electromagnets are differentially controlled in dependence on rate of displacement of the object and the sensitivity of this control is reduced as the displacement increases. As shown, rate of vertical movement of a rotor 2 suspended between electromagnets 5, 6 is detected by the effect of a permanent magnet 7, fixed to the rotor, moving relative to a fixed coil 14 the output of which differentially controls, through an amplifier 16, the energization of coils 10, 11 to damp the movement. Deviations of the rotor from a desired vertical position have a differential effect on the amount of light from a source 21 reaching photo-cells 19 the outputs of which differentially control, through an amplifier 24, the energization of coils 12, 13 to correct the position. The output of amplifier 24 is also applied through a rectifier 33 to control the gain of amplifier 16 so that the degree of damping is reduced when the positional error increases.
