1,268,193. 4 - (Pyridyl) - tetrahydropyrans, -tetrahydrothiopyrans or -piperidines. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 3 March, 1969 [20 Dec., 1968], No. 46735/71. Divided out of 1,268,191. Heading C2C. 4 - (Pyridyl)tetrahydropyrans, -tetrahydro - thiopyrans or -piperidines are obtained by a process which comprises heating the corresponding 3-(pyridyl)-pentane-diol, -dithiol or hydroxy thiol. at a temperature of at least 250‹ C. and, when the 4-(pyridyl)-piperidine is desired as the product in the presence of NH 3 . 4 - (Pyridyl)-tetrahydrothiopyrans may also be prepared by heating pyridyl pentane-1,5- diols in the presence of H 2 S, or by heating a pyridyl alkane-hydroxy-thiol in the presence or absence of H 2 S. Examples are given for the production of the compounds. They are useful as intermediates in the preparation of bipyridyls.
