[Also in Division B3] Apparatus for slicing sheets of material from a block of such material, e.g. foamed plastics or cork, comprises a rotary table 10, Fig. 1, a knife H supported above the table for slitting a block carried past the knife on the table, and means to move the knife relative to the table to increase or decrease the clearance between the knife and the table. In the apparatus described, the table 10, Fig. 8, is annular and is driven along a pair of concentric circular tracks. The knife is in the form of an endless band 59 carried and driven by pulleys 60, in a pair of end housings 40 carried on columns C. The housings 40 are supported on sleeves 28, Fig. 5, vertically slidable on pillars 20 within the columns C under the control of lead screws. Automatic means are provided for controlling the drive of the lead screws so that the cutting head H, Fig. 8, carrying the band 59 is lowered by a predetermined distance after each passage of a block B on the table 10 so that slices of uniform thickness are cut from the block. A driven grinding wheel may be provided on each side of the band 59 to hone it during use. A photo-electric device detects when the band has been worn by honing and causes a drive to be actuated which advances back-stops for the band which advance its cutting edge to its original position to compensate for the wear. A safety wire may be provided ahead of the band 59 which if it detects any obstruction on the table 10, stops drive of the band and preferably also the table.
