Abstract

1,267,788. Coupling together optical glass fibres. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 27 Oct., 1970, No. 50956/70. Heading C1H. To couple together end to end, two optical glass fibres, each comprising a core and cladding sheath, the ends of the fibres are formed into substantially plane faces which are butted together in a two-part glass jig made of a glass having a fusion temperature matched to the glass diffusion temperature of the fibres, the jig then being heated to cause fusion of the two parts of the jig, which thereby retains the fibre ends under light radial compression, and to cause the diffusion of the core and cladding glasses into each other adjacent the ends. The jigs two parts 1 and 2 hold the fibre ends 4 in a right-angled groove 3 of such depth that before heating, the fibre 4 is just above the level of the lower part 2 so that on fusion, there is light pressure to hold the fibre ends in position. Diffusion of the core and cladding glasses allows for any slight mismatch or eccentricity of the fibre cores.
