Abstract

1,267,774. Sorting apparatus. SPHERE INVESTMENTS Ltd. 26 March, 1970, No. 14840/70. Heading G4H. [Also in Division G1] In apparatus for accepting or rejecting articles, e.g. rocks as they fall past a deflector 20 (Fig. 1) the articles are carried (by a conveyer belt 12) past a sensing head 17 which delivers a signal representing the time the article is in front of it to a gate 41 (Fig. 3) which simultaneously receives pulses of a frequency corresponding to the belt speed so that the count in a counter 27 represents the length of the article. The count controls logic circuitry 30 which if the article is to be rejected, indicated by a blast signal 37, shortens the length of the signal to allow for the fact that the object is accelerating past the deflector and stores the modified signal in register 31 which is stepped at a rate dependent on the belt speed so that when the article reaches the deflector one or two of the register stages'enables blast control 21 for the time taken for the article to pass the deflector. The blast signal 37 is generated by a sensor 17 which is preferably photo-electric and compares signals representing characteristics of the article with predetermined levels. The belt speed sensor preferably comprises a magnetic pick-up sensing magnetic slugs on the conveyer belt. The logic circuitry 30 comprises NAND gates 50-58 controlled by the stages of the counter 27 so that a number of adjacent "1" bits are stored in the register 31, the number representing the time the article will take to pass the deflector and the position of the first "1" representing the time at which it will arrive at the deflector.
