Abstract

1,267,271. Electrically conductive fibres. TEIJIN Ltd. 20 March, 1969 [18 June, 1968], No. 14836/69. Headings D1F and D1W. A method of spinning is characterised by the step of incorporating into staple fibres to be spun at least 0.01%, based on the weight of said fibres, of electrically conductive staple fibres which comprise a substrate of synthetic organic polymer fibre and an electrically conductive coating thereon, said electrically conductive fibres having the functional properties of textile fibres and an electrical resistance of less than 2000 meg ohms per centimetre. Properties of the electrically conductive fibre include a tensile strength of at least one gram per denier, an elongation at break of at least 3% and an initial Young's modulus not exceeding 3000 kilogram per square millimetre. The coating preferably comprises a polymeric binder matrix having finely divided particles of an electrically conductive material dispersed therein. Examples of suitable materials are listed in the specification but it is preferred to use silver or carbon particles. The electrically conductive fibres may be incorporated into fibres to be spun in several ways e.g. blending with raw stock of staple fibres, incorporating into a lap consisting of the fibres to be spun, attenuating slivers of the fibres to be spun together with slivers comprising the electrically conductive fibres, or the electrically conductive fibres in continuous filamentary form are mixed with tows consisting of the fibres to be spun and the resultant tow is cut to staple length.
