Abstract
1,267,167. Coated sheet materials; reverse osmosis membrane. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 29 Aug., 1969 [30 Sept., 1968], No. 43196/69. Headings B1L, B1X and B2E. A gas-permeable structure comprises a continuous polymeric film of thickness less than 0.3 mils coated on a porous substrate. Such a structure is made by applying a polymeric solution to a substrate composed of two phases, one of which is separable from the other to create the desired porosity, evaporating solvent and removing said one phase, e.g. by leaching, melting or evaporation. The product may be stored prior to eliminating the movable phase. The substrate may be polyethylene or polypropylene which incorporates a leachable material, e.g. benzoates or substituted benzoates of Na, Li, K, Ca, water-soluble anionic surfactants (from which a microporous substrate can be prepared) or liquid dimethylsulphoxide. The film, which may be applied by dipping or knife-coating, can be of poly(2,6-diphenylphenylene oxide) (optionally sulphonated or sulphonated and brominated), poly(2,6-dimethylphenylene oxide) (optionally sulphonated), polyphenylene oxide or an organosiloxane-polycarbonate copolymer.
