The invention comprises complexes of cobalt phthalocyanines with aliphatic or aromatic diamines, the complexes having the general formula wherein each Z is an aliphatic or aromatic diamine, X- is an anion and the rhomboid represents the ring system wherein A, B and C are either a heterocyclic ring system or a fused benzene ring which may be substituted by halogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy or phenyl, at least one of A, B and C being a heterocyclic ring, and D is a fused benzene ring which may be substituted by halogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy or phenyl groups. Preferred aliphatic amines used have the general formula H 2 N-X-N(R 1 )R 2 wherein X is a branched or unbranched C 2 -C 5 alkylene radical, R 1 is H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl and R 2 is C 1 -C 4 alkyl or cyclohexyl. The complexes are prepared by reacting the cobalt phthalocyanine and diamine in presence of an oxidizing agent and a source of anions. Gaseous chlorine diluted with nitrogen, air or oxygen may be used as oxidizing agent and the anions which may be present include chloride, bromide or nitrate anions. The reaction takes place at 10-75‹ C. The complexes are used to dye cellulosic materials the complex releasing the diamine at the dyeing temperature.
