In an asynchronous motor having a threephase winding, a reduction in the number of slots normally required is obtained by filling alternate slots with one phase winding 1, halffilling the intermediate slots with a second phase winding 2 and filling the remaining halves of the intermediate slots by the third phase winding 3 which is reversely connected with respect to the winding 2, the starts or ends of the windings being star-connected at W, U, V and the relationship between the numbers of conductors per slot U 1 , U 2 , U 3 respectively for the three phases being U 2 =U 3 =(U 1 /#3). The winding produces two alternating fields, one from phase 1 and a resultant field from phases 2 and 3 phase displaced by 90 degrees, the two together generating a rotating field.
