Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A method of continuously mixing a synthetic resin with a foaming agent and other solid or liquid components comprises supplying them to a mixer having a stirrer 1 consisting of a core carrying two helical ribbon webs 2 of opposite hand and rotated at 800-3,000 rev./min., the temperature and resistence time of the resin and other mixture components being such as to preclude foaming in the mixing chamber. As shown the core also carries a conveying screw 10 to which solid material is supplied by a screw conveyer 9, the resin entering at 4. There is a heating jacket not depicted, and the apparatus is operated so that H 1 n 1 is greater than H 2 n 2 . Preferred relative dimensions of the helical ribbons, stirer and mixing chamber are given, see also Fig. 2 (not shown). Mixing may take place in a downward (see also Fig. 1, not shown) or upward (see Fig. 4, not shown) direction. An example (see Division C3) relates to a phenolic resin composition.
