Abstract

1,266,139. Moderator structures. BRITISH NUCLEAR DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Ltd. 28 March, 1969 [9 April, 1968], No. 17065/68. Heading G6C. In a gas-cooled nuclear reactor core, formed of columns of graphite blocks 1, the columns are mutually self supporting by means of the central zones 2. An external circumferential restraint structure surrounds the core. The faces 3, of the zones 2, in adjacent columns, are urged into engagement by the co-operating ratchet teeth 6, 7 at the base of each column. The weight of a column, acting at the inclined surfaces of 6, 7, provides a torque about the column axis to urge the faces 3 together by rotation of the column. Dimension changes, due to irradiation, are thus accommodated.
