Abstract

1,265,965. Vacuum deposition of alloys. DEFENCE, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR. Aug.14, 1969 [July 26, 1968], No.35730/68. Headings C7D and C7F. Multiphase alloys are produced by vacuum evaporation of the constituents from controllably heated sources and deposition as a coating thicker than 0À01" on a temperature controlled collector, the source and collector repeatedly passing each other so as to deposit successive layers. The alloy constituents may be evaporated from a single or several sources and the collector is preferably reciprocated or rotated above the source at 50-1500 r.p.m. The deposited alloy may be heat treated before or after removal from the collector and may be mechanically worked. Deposit thickness is controlled by varying the speed of moving collector, and the evaporation rate. Oxides, carbides and intermetallics may be deposited with the metal to form dispersion hardened alloys. Separate moveable shutters are located between sources and collector. The pressure, heat input, temperature, evaporation and deposition rates are monitored. The evaporant sources are continuously replenished by a wire feed and the heating may be effected by electron beam. The following alloys are deposited from separate sources: Al-7%Ni; Al-4À3%Ni; Al-5%Fe; Al-6À5%Ti; Al-5À5%Cr; Al-5%Mn; Al-Si; Al-Mg; Al-Co; Al-Sb; Al-Cu; Mg-Fe. As shown in Fig.1 (not shown) the evaporants are heated in crucibles 13 and 14 and the rotatable collector assembly 27 mounted on shaft 28 comprises collector plate 29 mounted on tube 30. Control of the temperature of the collector is effected by a thermostatically controlled heater in the plate 29 and a water cooled unit comprising a piston which moves inside the assembly 27.
