Abstract

[Also in Division G3] The speed of an A.C. motor 4, supplied through a switching device 3, is regulated by adjusting the frequency at which the device 3 is operated in accordance with a voltage dependent on the speed derived from a tachogenerator 5. The tachogenerator 5 provides an A.C. signal which is rectified at 6 and compared with a desired speed signal 8 at 7. The output of the comparator 7 is used to control the frequency of an oscillator 1 whose output is amplified at 2 and used to trigger the switching device 3 which may be a symmetrical thyristor such as a Triac. By means of a synchronizing signal 9 the oscillator pulses are arranged to trigger the thyristor 3 at the zero of the A.C. supply and the pulses are of sufficient length that the thyristor stays on for one full cycle of the supply. The supply to the motor is thus in the form of complete cycles at spaced intervals, the intervals varying with the error signal to maintain constant the motor speed. The oscillator 1 may be replaced by an integrating counter which counts the half-waves of the A.C. supply at a rate determined by the time integral of the voltage 10 and issues a pulse to trigger the thyristor after a number of half-waves, the number being varied in accordance with the speed error signal.
