A fountain type coffee percolator, Figs.1 and 2, (not shown), has a variable thermostat which may be set according to both the amount of water within and strength of coffee required. The thermostat 27, which contacts the bottom of the container portion of the percolator, has an adjustment screw 26 which acts on the contact leaf 32. The screw is rotated by means of the lever 25 whose slot 24 engages the pin 23 on the lever activating arm 21. Thus the thermostat is set by movement of arm 21 by means of a knob 12 which moves past a scale (13) graduated in numbers of cups. The knob has three regions, weak, medium and strong, indicated in some manner and in operation the appropriate region is aligned with the appropriate number of cups, see Fig. 1, (not shown). Alternatively the knob may have a single pointer and the scale may be movable to set the strength, either indicated by a pointer on the scale co-operating with a second scale or a fixed pointer co-operating with a portion of the scale. The thermostat may be adjustable continuously or in discrete steps. Alternatively a number of thermostats set to different temperatures may be used, the appropriate one being selected by the control mechanism.
