Abstract
1,265,496. Acrylamide copolymers. CALGON CORP. 26 Feb., 1969 [4 March, 1968], No. 10207/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Divisions C2 and D2] A copolymer is made from a mixture of acrylamide with one or more diallyl-quaternary ammonium chlorides of the formula in a weight ratio of 3: 7 to 7: 3 and then partially hydrolysed to a polymer comprising units of the formulµ the hydrolysis being to such an extent that the ratio X: W is from 100:1 to 2:1. In these formulµ R and R<SP>1</SP> may be similar or dissimilar, and each is a C 1 to C 18 alkyl, beta-propionamido or carboxymethyl radical, and M<SP>+</SP> is an alkalimetal or ammonium cation. In the Examples: (I) acrylamide, diethyl - diallyl - ammonium chloride (DEDAAC), dimethyl - diallyl - ammonium chloride (DMDAAC) and water, with small amounts of EDTA and sodium salicylate, are adjusted to pH 6À5 and purged with nitrogen, ammonium persulphate is added, followed by sodium bisulphite and a small amount of copper sulphate; the polymer is hydrolysed by pumping into it a solution of KOH; (II) acrylamide, DMDAAC and diallyl-beta-propionamido - methyl - ammonium chloride are copolymerized and the polymer hydrolysed similarly; (III) acrylamide, carboxymethylbeta - propionamido - diallyl - ammonium chloride and DMDAAC are copolymerized and the polymer hydrolysed similarly; (V) similar to Example I, but hydrolysed to a smaller degree by pumping in the KOH solution more slowly; (VII) similar to Example I, but with a smaller proportion of DEDAAC, and hydrolysed to a greater degree by adding more KOH more quickly; (IX) a mixture of DMDAAC and acrylamide is polymerized as in Example I and hydrolysed with a solution of NaOH; (X) DMDAAC, acrylamide and diallyl-methyl-betapropionamido-ammonium chloride are dissolved in water and aqueous catalyst solution of (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 8 and Na 2 S 2 O 5 added, the polymer is hydrolysed by treatment with KOH solution.
