Abstract
1,265,397. Dichloro-trifluoromethyl benzoic acids. SANDOZ Ltd. 24 April, 1969 [17 May, 1968], No. 20879/69. Heading C2C. Novel compounds of formula wherein when a -Cl is ortho to -CF 3 the -COOH group is in the position meta to the -CF 3 group and adjacent to both Cl groups, are obtained by (i) treating a compound of Formula II wherein when -Cl is ortho to -CF 3 , Li is meta to -CF 3 and adjacent to both Cl groups, with C0 2 in an organic solvent which is inert under the reaction conditions or, (ii) oxidizing a compound of Formula V in which when a -Cl is ortho to -CF 3 , the -CHO is meta to the -CF 3 and adjacent to both Cl groups, in an inert solvent. Herbicidal compositions comprise compounds of Formula I above or their basic salts in combination with an agriculturally acceptable diluent or carrier.
