Abstract

1,265,131. Reciprocating dispensing pumps. DIAMOND INTERNATIONAL CORP. Jan. 8, 1970 [Jan. 17, 1969], No. 938/70. Heading F1A. A hand-actuated liquid dispensing pump is adapted to be secured to a container and comprises a piston 22 of elastomeric plastics material, having a pair of conically tapered skirts 84, 88, slidably mounted on a valve stem 56 of a discharge valve 24, the stem 56 being fixedly connected to a plunger rod 14 having a discharge passage 16 therein. A spring 20 acting between the bottom of the pump cylinder 10 and the discharge valve 24 urges the plunger rod 14, piston 22 and discharge valve 24 to their upper position in which position the lower piston skirt 88 and a lower piston sleeve 90 co-operate with an annular wall on the discharge valve 24 to prevent liquid, which can pass through peripheral openings 64 in the discharge valve 24, from entering the annular space 26 which is formed between the piston 22 and the valve stem 56 and communicates with the discharge passage 16. In this position the upper piston skirt 84 engages between two concentric shoulders depending from a collar 36 having an opening 38 for the plunger rod 14, sealing this opening 38 from a breather chamber 40 having a vent 42. Upon depression of the plunger rod 14, the stem 56 first moves down relative to the piston 22 opening the space 26 to the pump cylinder 10, then when the lower end of the pistonrod 14 engages a shoulder 76 on the piston 22, the latter is moved down allowing the breather chamber 40 to communicate with the atmosphere via the opening 38, thus enabling a quantity of liquid to be dispensed. When the plunger rod 14 is released, the spring 20 acts on the valve 24 to close the discharge passage 16, the breather chamber 40 remaining open until the plunger rod 14 reaches its fully raised position enabling a further charge of liquid to enter the pump cylinder 10. The piston 22 is symmetrical about a central transverse axis to facilitate assembly. A cap 92 may be fitted over the plunger rod 14 for transportation and when not in use.
