Abstract

[Also in Division D1] Apparatus for heat treating continuous lengths of strip material e.g. metal, plastics, paper or textile comprises a chamber 2 and a wheeled carriage 3 with vertical end frames 9 joined by parallel support members 8 carrying guide rolls 12 and fixed outer material guides 15 and 16 incorporating guide rolls 17, the path of the strip M being such that as the carriage moves outwardly, outer material passes 25 lengthen and inner passes 22 shorten and vice versa. Disposed between support members 8 are hot air ducts 11 with upper and lower delivery ports (36, Fig. 3) supplied by a fan 41, the air being recirculated by side ducts (39, Fig. 1) containing burners (40). The material is supplied and discharged by roll stands 30, 31 by which its tension may be varied and openings 35 in the chamber front wall 4 allow passage of the members 8. For a fixed material exposure time the extent to which the carriage 3 projects into the chamber may be varied automatically or otherwise according to the strip speed. A temperature sensing device 33 near the exit of the last pass 22 enables the temperature reading to be used to adjust the temperature or tension of the strip. In a modification (Fig. 4) there are two spaced-apart treatment passes and two outer passes disposed within the height of this space. The feed and discharge of the strip-are on opposite sides of the chamber. Another modification (Fig. 5) has two treatment passes and two outer passes arranged alternately with regard to height.
