Abstract

1,264,543. Friction clutches; brake friction elements. ABEX CORP. 20 Feb., 1969 [11 March, 1968], No. 9321/69. Headings F2C and F2E. [Also in Division C7] The friction element of a clutch or brake is made of a sintered metallic material, the peripheral portion of which has a higher density than the remainder of the material. The element is preferably made from a Cu or Fe base powder, e.g. 67À3% Cu, 5À3% Sn, 8À7% Pb, 7À2% Fe, 7À1% C, 4À4% SiO 2 by compacting and sintering and the increased peripheral density is achieved by differential coining at 150,000- 1,000,000 p.s.i. The friction element is preferably bonded to a backing plate during sintering.
