Abstract

1,264,301. Aerials. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 22 Dec., 1966 [24 Sept., 1965], No. 40871/65. Heading H4A. In a microwave aerial, a Luneberg lens, containing a reflecting plate, is rotatable above a vertical axis. The aerial is fed from external static R.F. feeds and azimuth scan is effected by rotation of the reflecting plate. Elevation cover is effected by a number of feeds in elevation, selected by R.F. switches. By tilting the reflecting plate about a horizontal axis, two elevation beam positions are available. Where the lens is supplied from polarized external sources and has a polarized reflector, a further movable feed having an opposite polarization may radiate through the reflector and may be moved independently of the polarized beam to provide continuous tracking in illumination. With the rotating system, the beam has a short period of dwell on any one zone of the lens, and the formation of hot spots is reduced.
