Abstract

1,263,921. Gear pumps. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. May 22, 1969 [April 25, 1968], No. 19593/68. Heading F1F. In a gear pump having a pair of intermeshing spur gears of involute form rotatably mounted in a casing, the trailing face of each tooth of both gears is relieved in a region 12, disposed symmetrically about the intersection 13 of the pitch circle and the face and which region terminates short of the lateral ends of the face. When the milling of the region is performed by a circular cutter which rotates about an axis perpendicular to the region, it has a flat base as shown. When the milling is performed by a drum-shaped cutter which rotates about an axis extending parellel to the region, its base is concave. Pockets between adjacent pairs of meshing teeth communicate through a gap defined between the relieved regions such that the pressure in the pocket which is reducing in volume is relieved to the adjacent pocket which is increasing in volume to equalize the pressure between the two pockets.
