Abstract

1,263,820. Purging headspaces of filled containers. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. 25 Nov., 1969 [5 Dec., 1968], No. 57597/69. Heading B8C. A method of purging the air from the space between the contents of a container C and a flanged cover E carried towards and over the mouth of the container C comprises directing a first gas jet stream against the cover flange as the cover E approaches the container C, directing a second gas stream into the space transversely of the container and simultaneously directing a third gas stream against a wall portion W of the container C. Apparatus capable of such a method comprises a cover infeed turret (15, Fig. 1) and a linear infeed conveyer (10, Fig. 1) for delivering filled containers to the closing turret (11, Fig. 1). The cover infeed turret 15 rotates about a shaft 20 and includes a number of nozzle sectors 17 each having an arcuate wall 21 defining a container pocket P. A first bank of ports 23 is provided in an inner wall 28 depending from the top of the nozzle sector 17 and a second bank of smaller ports 25 is provided in an outer wall 29, all these ports being in communication with a manifold chamber 27. The inner and outer walls define an arcuate by-pass passage 30 communicating with the chamber 27 and leading to an arcuate discharge space 31. A long arcuate slot 61, Fig. 9, is provided between a cover-plate 60 and the top plane of the nozzle sectors 17. Gas is supplied to this slot 61 from a line 63 via a port 62 in the cover-plate 60, so that whilst a cover E is supported by its flange E<SP>1</SP> on a rail 18a, the cover is flushed with a fan of gas from the slot 61. The infeed turret 13 and the conveyer 10 are arranged to deliver containers and covers conconcentrically to a point (T, Fig. 2) on the closing turret (11). The point (T) is on a line (Y-Y, Fig. 2) diametric of both turrets (11 and 15), this diametric line (Y-Y) being inclined to a line (X-X, Fig. 2) through the point (T) perpendicular to the line of the conveyer (10), with the centre of the infeed turret at that side of the perpendicular line (X-X) from which the containers approach the point (T) along the conveyer (10).
