[Also in Division G3] A control arrangement for electro-slag refining apparatus comprises means for varying the voltage applied between the electrode 3 and the ingot 5 being formed, in response to the difference between the actual growth of the ingot and the growth which will give a shallow dish shaped pool of molten metal at the top of the ingot. In addition, the speed of an electric motor 9 which lowers the electrode into the slag pool 7 may be controlled by unspecified means 25 so as to keep the impedance, and hence the length of the gap constant. The impedance is determined at 23 from a measurement at 19 of the voltage between the electrode and ingot, and the current, measured at 21. The growth of the ingot may be measured by load cells, or the height of the growing ingot may be detected by devices 43 comprising thermocouples, capacitive or inductive sensing devices, X-ray apparatus, devices sensitive to radio active material in the ingot, or devices using sonic or ultra-sonic oscillations, but as shown the growth of the ingot is deduced from the loss in weight of the electrode 3, measured by load cells 27 whose output is compared with a reference at 31 to control the applied voltage at 17. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the electrode is lowered at a constant speed, which corresponds to the desired rate of growth, and the impedance of the gap, measured as in Fig. 1, is a measure of the difference between the desired growth and the actual growth and so this measurement is used to control the applied voltage. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the lowering of the electrode is controlled by the impedance measurement as in Fig. 1, but the growth is determined by measuring the rate of feed of the electrode, comparison of this with a reference being used to control the applied voltage. The comparison may be made electrically or by a differential gear having input shafts rotating at the actual and desired feed rates respectively. It is mentioned that, alternatively, the ingot could be moved towards the electrode, and the growth rate may be varied automatically or manually, particularly at the beginning and end of operations.
