Abstract

1,263,266. Bunch-ended containers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 May, 1969 [12 June, 1968], No. 27901/68. Heading B8C. A method of forming a ligature to a lay-flat tubular plastics film 2 by bunching the tubing and applying an encircling closure device 3 to the bunched region is characterized in that the flat tubing, before it is bunched, is curved across its width to bring it to a part-cylindrical form, and is held in such form until it is bunched, the curve being concave towards the axis of the bunch. As shown, the flattened tubing 2 is advanced over a forming shoe 1 which curves it longitudinally into semicircular, part cylindrical form, and through a pair of iris diaphragm gathering devices 3, 3<SP>1</SP> which operate together to gather the tubular film evenly, at 4, about the axis of the forming shoe. Ligatures 5, 5, and heat seals 7, 7 which may be previously formed in the film, provide closures capable of resisting considerable superatmospheric pressures within the containers. The tubing may be cut transversely between the ligatures 7, 7<SP>1</SP> to form tubular containers, closed at both ends and suitable for filling, e.g. with beer or carbonated drink by the method described in Specification 1,251,672. Alternatively, the containers may be collected for storage and separated from the length as they are used. Filling apertures may be provided in the tubing before it is drawn over the shoe. The tube can be formed by sealing together the longitudinal edges of a strip of plastics. Containers, open at one end, may be formed by cutting across the containers 6 between pairs of ligatures 7, 7 the tubing being perforated at the cutting areas. The film is preferably made of biaxially orientated film, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate.
