Abstract
1,262,571. Hydrofluoric acid. BUSS A.G. 15 Feb., 1969, No. 8322/69. Heading C1A. Hydrogen fluoride is recovered from hydrofluosilicic acid by (a) mixing therewith (in 2) water and silicon tetrafluoride recycled from (c) (through line 3), (b) thermally hydrolysing the mixture (in 4) to give water vapour, HF vapour, gaseous SiF 4 and by-product Si(OH) 4 , (c) superheating the vapours (in 11) and before the SiF 4 and water recombine, contacting them countercurrently (in 13) with a hot absorbent selective for HF, (d) externally heating the absorption zone (13), (e) contacting the HF- loaded absorbent with liquid HF-water azeotrope (introduced from line 15 into 14) whereby the water boils off and (f) stripping HF from the loaded absorbent (in 17) and recycling said absorbent (through line 18). Stripping may be effected by countercurrently contacting the loaded absorbent with a vapour phase stripping solvent (27) or by means of a subatmospheric pressure. As shown in the Figure, to which the numerals relate, the HF-loaded stripping solvent is passed to heat exchanger 20 and by means of further cooling in the sump, solvent 33 and HF containing minor amounts of water separate into layers. The solvent is recycled via evaporator 34 and the HF rectified in column 21 to give anhydrous vapours, which are condensed at 26, and azeotrope 23 for recycling to 14. Specified absorbents are polyethers, polyalcohols and/or polyglycols if desired together with diphenyl oxide or naphthalene. Specified solvents are water vapour mixed with heptane or nonane.
